Now in its second edition, this popular textbook on game theory is unrivalled in the breadth of its coverage, the thoroughness of technical explanations and the number of worked examples included. Covering non-cooperative and cooperative games, this introduction to game theory includes advanced chapters on auctions, games with incomplete information, games with vector payoffs, stable matchings and the bargaining set. This edition contains new material on stochastic games, rationalizability, and the continuity of the set of equilibrium points with respect to the data of the game. The material is presented clearly and every concept is illustrated with concrete examples from a range of disciplines. With numerous exercises, and the addition of a solution manual for instructors with this edition, the book is an extensive guide to game theory for undergraduate through graduate courses in economics, mathematics, computer science, engineering and life sciences, and will also serve as useful reference for researchers.

About the Authors

Michael Bahir Maschler (July 22, 1927 – July 20, 2008) was a distinguished Israeli mathematician celebrated for his profound contributions to game theory. As a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he was affiliated with both the Einstein Institute of Mathematics and the Center for the Study of Rationality. Maschler is best known for developing the Bargaining Set for cooperative games, which led to concepts like the kernel and the nucleolus. His work on repeated games with incomplete information was also pivotal, influencing extensive further research. Throughout his career, Maschler was recognized for his teaching excellence and his lasting impact on game theory, which continues to inspire new generations of scholars.

Eilon Solan is an Israeli mathematician and professor at Tel Aviv University, where he holds the Nathan and Lily Silver Chair in Stochastic Models. Born in 1969, he earned his B.Sc. in mathematics and computer science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1989, followed by an M.Sc. in mathematics from Tel Aviv University in 1993, and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Hebrew University in 1998. His research focuses on game theory, stochastic processes, and measure theory. Notably, Solan was one of the inventors of CAPTCHA in 1997. He has authored several books, including "Game Theory" and "A Course in Stochastic Game Theory," and holds editorial positions in prominent journals such as the International Journal of Game Theory and Games and Economic Behavior.

Shmuel Zamir is a prominent Israeli economist and mathematician born on December 27, 1939, in Baghdad, Iraq2. He immigrated to Israel in 1950 and pursued his undergraduate and M.Sc. studies in Physics and Mathematics from 1959 to 19642. Zamir is associated with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and has made significant contributions to the field of economics3. His expertise is recognized through various prestigious affiliations, including being a Fellow of the Econometric Society, a Fellow of the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory (SAET), and a Fellow of the Game Theory Society4. Zamir's work has earned him recognition as a member of the Academy of Europe, highlighting his influential role in advancing economic theory and game theory.
